Anyone in South Africa is entitled to be an “interested and affected party” (I&AP) in the EIA proposals for nuclear nightmares such as the PBMR. A massive report of “specialist studies” for this EIA is currently out for public comment, once again with limited time. We asked for a 90 day extension but were granted an additional 2 weeks – actually less considering that notice was only given of this extension on 28 October, 4 days after the event. The new deadline is 7 November. This is a flawed document with flawed arguments. Don’t let them get away with it –  Make your voices heard!

To assist you write your own comment CANE will provide submissions which will be sent with data that DEAT SHOULD have to try and ensure some balance – please ask if you’d like a copy.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT (EIA: 12/12/20/745)

FOR THE PROPOSED 400 MW (t) PEBBLE BED MODULAR REACTOR DEMONSTRATION POWER PLANT (PBMR DPP)

REVIEW OF DRAFT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT REPORT AND SPECIALIST STUDIES: EXTENSION OF COMMENT PERIOD

As previously announced, an opportunity to review the Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) and associated Specialist Studies commenced on 05 September 2008 and closed on 24 October 2008 (a 50-day comment period). During this period, various Interested and Affected Parties submitted requests for an extension of the review period.

You are therefore notified that the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism has extended the comment period by an additional two weeks thereby making the closing date for comment Friday, 07 November 2008. You are, therefore, afforded the opportunity to use the extended period to submit any additional comments.

At the end of the comment period, comments received on the Draft EIR will be used to produce the Final EIR to be submitted to the Environmental Authorities for consideration. A letter will be sent to all registered Interested and Affected Parties informing them of the Environmental Authorities’ decision.

On behalf of the Project Team, I should like to thank all those who have participated in the Impact Assessment Phase by submitting comments on the Draft Environmental Impact Report and/or attended Public and Focus Group Meetings held during the period 07-16 October 2008.

Additional comments can be submitted in writing in one of the following ways:

By mail: ACER (Africa), PBMR EIA, PO Box 503, Mtunzini, 3867

By fax:  035 – 340 2232

By email:     pbmr@acerafrica.co.za

On behalf of the EIA Team, again I should like to thank everyone who has participated in the EIA process to date and those who will take further time to review the Draft EIR.

Many thanks,

Bongi Shinga
