Press Release: CANE highlights nuclear Necsa’s duplicitous need for coal

10 September 2007
Nuclear is not the clean, safe power that nuclear proponents would so dearly like the public to believe. Problem is that unlike burning fossil fuels where even as laymen we can see and smell the pollution, nuclear is a silent and sometimes a slow killer, it is invisible, it has no taste or smell – we only know we are being poisoned by radioactive emissions when it is too late.

Nuclear will not aid global warming either. It is not a lot better than the carbon footprint of coal when the full cycle is considered. The use of nearly 3 000 tons of coal annually by NECSA is only a very minor part of the nuclear mess, the rest is far more hazardous.

Uranium mining tailings spreads radioactive material far & wide, it enters our food chain, our water supplies; the day by day running of any nuclear plant – even if we exclude the potential for accidental – is detrimental to anyone exposed to its emissions.

Only when ordinary citizens take the trouble to investigate the dangers and health hazards for themselves and stand up for a safe and clean environment will this dinosaur nuclear industry be finally slain before it creates more monsters in the form of radioactive waste, spreads more cancers and takes more lives.

The nuclear industry also uses vast amounts of water (destroying river/marine life in the process) and now coal also? (Engineering News 7 September) So much for its supposed environmental concern – in fact the nuclear industry actually contributes significantly to global warming and greenhouse gases.

Anyone who wishes to join us in the fight for a clean safe environment can contact the Pelindaba Working Group, a member of CANE (Coalition Against Nuclear Energy).
