A proposed nuclear power station at Thuyspunt would be a disaster for the environment and tourism in Jeffrey’s Bay and St Francis Bay, the Supertubes Surfing Foundation said on Monday.

“Local and international surfers … will not fancy a surf in radioactive waves at one of the best right-handers in the world,” said the organisation, which takes care of beaches and protects sand dunes in Jeffrey’s Bay.

The organisation said seawater would be used to cool the proposed plant’s condensers and then returned to the ocean.

“We are not satisfied that pumping…

Greenpeace Supports Historic Launch

If the nuclear industry thinks they’re on the edge of a nuclear renaissance, they’ll have to think again − at least in South Africa.

This past weekend in Bloemfontein saw the successful launch of the Coalition Against Nuclear Energy (CANE), with representatives from all corners of the country, including: Namaqualand communities affected by nuclear waste at Vaalputs; neighbours of Koeberg Nuclear Power Station; landowners around Pelindaba (site of the proposed pebble-bed fuel factory, nuclear enrichment plant, and nuclear waste smelter), and residents opposed to the proposed sites for a new nuclear power station at Bantamsklip and Thyspunt,…

Storm clouds continue to gather over the controversial and seemingly universal slide towards nuclear power. While proponents and antagonists construct compelling reasons for and against its use, the jury stays out on its potentially harmful environmental effects.

Local anti-nuclear activists are infuriated that an international panel listed Valli Moosa, chairperson of the Eskom board and former environment minister, one of “50 people who could save the planet”. Moosa, who is also president of the world’s largest environmental non-governmental organisation, the World Conservation Union (IUCN), was cited for his support…

Koeberg looks increasingly likely to be the site of South Africa’s second nuclear power station.

A report released on Monday ruled out building at two Northern Cape sites and said the three other sites Eskom has proposed should be investigated further.

These are Duynefontein, right next to Koeberg, Bantamsklip, 10km southeast of Pearly Beach, and Thyspunt, near Cape St Francis. However, Koeberg comes up trumps in comparison, rating favourably in eight out of the 13 categories for assessment.

Its advantages include the existing nuclear infrastructure and power…

THE National Nuclear Regulator (NNR), the body responsible for nuclear safety has slammed the brakes on Eskom’s planned pebble bed modular reactor (PBMR).     This is because of problems with the manufacture of safety equipment.

The suspension of the manufacture of safety-related components came in October and remains in force.

It is to be removed when Eskom and the PBMR (Pty) Ltd have provided the NNR with documentation to show that the manufacturing process meets the regulator’s quality…
