Whilst we were all discussing the many pitfalls that would ensue if we did not comment constructively on the IZS at our meeting at the Edgemead Hall on the 12th April, 2008 a very portentous launch was taking place in Bloemfontein.   This was the launch of CANE, the Coalition against Nuclear Energy www.cane.org.za, where you will find an online membership form should you officially want to join the coalition – a significant move in all respects.  We have been asked by CANE to attach their Endorsement form which may be completed and e-mailed to them caneoffice @ cane.org.za.  Although the launch date has been and gone they are still accepting members and endorsements.

CANE is not an umbrella for Leftist Crazies and whilst your suburb may be behind mountains and trees and beyond the 16 kms and 32 kms zones closest to the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, it must be remembered that the intention is to build a second NPS and PBMR at the Koeberg site, and that another four sites are supposedly under consideration as well.  Notwithstanding a second NPS and PBMR should there be an accident at the present and by now almost overage Station the desolation and impact would be enormous to the whole of Cape Town and beyond.  Eskom has admitted to the City that no evacuation plan is possible, so although there are periodic alerts and so-called exercises of which the public is never an active participant these appear to be so that people accept a false sense of security and not a sincere effort at success.  It should be noted further that in order to supply the type of energy that will be necessary by 2020 we would require 40 Nuclear Power Stations dotted around the country, all with no satisfactory way of storing uranium waste and all adding a Nuclear Footprint.

Anyone who has seen the documentary The Uranium Road will have seen a small synopsis of the polluting damage already evident from our attempts at storing uranium waste, uranium mining and Nuclear arms manufacture by Denel at Swartklip (as uncovered by Terry Crawford-Browne author of Eye on the Money).  Whether we like it or not the ultimate aim of having a Nuclear Industry is to produce Nuclear Weapons and this is now becoming abundantly clear.

Talking Nuclear is not a popular topic and one that produces almost irrational antagonists, whether due to fear or favour.  The Organizations that have come together to form CANE are peopled by pretty stable people in senior positions within their various organizations who do not wish to see the country they love destroyed, its inhabitants disfigured, maimed, ill and unemployed when Renewable Energy such as Wind and Solar are able to supply all our energy needs relatively cheaply, healthily and would train and employ a far greater workforce – certainly one that does not have to have scientific, engineering or ballistics qualifications to be considered employable.

Between us we probably represent about 2 million or so residents, what a difference that could make to an argument that affects us however indirectly.

We urge you in all sincerity to consider supporting them and invite you to visit our web
