Whilst we were all discussing the many pitfalls that would ensue if we did not comment constructively on the IZS at our meeting at the Edgemead Hall on the 12th April, 2008 a very portentous launch was taking place in Bloemfontein. This was the launch of CANE, the Coalition against Nuclear Energy www.cane.org.za, where you will find an online membership form should you officially want to join the coalition – a significant move in all respects. We have been asked by CANE to attach their Endorsement form which may be completed and e-mailed to them caneoffice @…

Nuclear Brainwashing at Taxpayers Expense
May 7th, 2008 · No Comments
The article below begs questions on how much is currently being spent on the nuclear industry’s “hearts and minds” propaganda projects below - especially it’s “public education” at taxpayers’ expense and contrary to all democratic principles of informed public debate.
We’ve already recieved mail from parents concerned that pro-nuclear indoctrination at school level has already begun. I find bizarre that NECSA can fork out untold thousands of taxpayer funds to win hearts and minds, and noble as it is, to fix up schools nearby its Pelindaba complex in the name of “corporate social responsibility” (surely a Dept of Education responsibility),…

U.S.: strontium-90 in baby teeth near Florida reactors
A study on childhood cancer near nuclear power plants in Florida, U.S., was released in April. According to the study by the Radiation and Public Health Project, levels of fission product strontium-90 in the teeth of children living in southeast Florida had increased with 37% from 1986-1989 to 1994-1997. The highest levels were found near the Turkey Point and St. Lucie reactors. The amount of radioactive strontium-90 appeared to be 85% higher in the teeth of children with cancer than those without. The…

Renewable Energy Sources Beating Nuclear

“Renewable sources are now producing more energy than nuclear stations in Germany. For years nuclear generation has contributed less than six per cent of the entire energy consumed, while in the first half of this year power from wind, water, the sun, bio sources and the heat of the earth comprised 6.4% of the electricity, heat and fuels consumed, up from five per cent in 2004. Simultaneously the clean energies also increased their contribution to climate protection. While the use of wind and other renewables displaced about 70 million tonnes of CO2 emissions in 2004, it will be 80 million…
